If you've ever heard Al "Carnival Time" Johnson sing his signature
song at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival chances are good
that you smiled and stepped a bit. Originally recorded in 1960 for the
Ric label this infectious song has become a Mardi Gras staple. Our New
Orleans cab-driving pal Dr. Bob reports seeing Mr. Johnson around town
taking care of various cab related duties by day but he does emerge from
his hack whenever called upon to add his talents to the festivities.
We played with Al "Carnival Time" Johnson at the 1st
Annual Ernie K-Doe R&B Tribute on May 2nd, 2002, at the
Mother-In-Law Lounge and, of course, he did his hit as well as a few
other NOLA standards that we all knew. A geniunely nice fellow I have
enjoyed his show every time I have seen him...everybody's havin'
fun!
